Empty Spaces

Your empty chair stares, gaping at me because there is only space where you should be Where every morning you would sit with a cup of coffee engrossed in the pages of current events In the last three years I would sit with you My coffee mug in hand and try to find a space at the table among the papers News discussions Talk of whatever was on our minds Doing the Jumble We were a good team Now there is emptiness Only remnants near your chair-a pen, glasses, magnifying glass on the windowsill Remnants, representations, objects that I identify with you But not you Spaces that will never again be filled because they belong only to you
